Hippotherapy -- “treatment with the help of a horse” from the Greek word “hippos” meaning horse.
An occupational, physical or speech therapist utilizes the horse’s movement to achieve functional outcomes:
Range of motion
Ability to concentrate and follow directions
In hippotherapy, the horse influences the client rather than the client controlling the horse (as in therapeutic riding). Hippotherapy establishes a foundation to improve physical strength, neurological function and sensory processing.
Hippotherapy is a tool in the therapies offered by physical and occupational therapists, and speech/language pathologists with St. Vincent Pediatric Rehabilitation.
